American milliner Adrienne Bennett shares her tips for matching the right hat to your dress in the article 'Wedding Outfits and Hats.' Wearing the right hat style with your dress will make you look and feel elegant, not costume-y.
Tips on choosing the right hat to go with your dress:
Tea Dress - Choose a broad brimmed hat with a round crown
Sun dress - Try a straw hat
Suit dress - Wear a more tailored hat with narrow brim
Sheath dress - Choose a small brimmed hat
Cocktail dress - Try on a Fascinator hat
Maxi dress - To balance the length of the dress, wear a Fascinator hat
Choose a dress to go with your hat:
Fascinator hat - Pair it with a cocktail dress for evening or a maxi dress for day or evening.
Small brimmed hat - Try a sheath dress, or a two piece suit dress (dress with blazer)
Straw hat - Choose a sundress
Broad brimmed hat with round crown - Wear it with a tea dress
Scala hat, Lilly Pulitzer sundress and earrings

Want to feel inspired to wear hats?

Lovely suggestions one and all. Another type of hat that I'm quite fond of wearing with sun dresses is 1950s "headband" style hats, especially if they're adorned with pretty flowers.
ReplyDeleteHappiest holiday season wishes, my dear friend!

Jessica, That's a good tip. Do you have any photos of you in an outfit like that?
DeleteThanks for highlighting me on your blog today.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for offering your expertise!
DeleteYou are picture perfect as always. I've been stretching my hat scope lately, largely inspired by you and a couple of other bloggers. I love your suggestions. I have the perfect faux fur hat for cold, cold weather - it swallows my face but I LOVE it. I'll post it with some Jacki O shades when the temperature dives.
ReplyDeleteMelanie, I am a big fan of hats selectively and mysteriously hiding parts of the face. I look forward to seeing your hat!

DeleteThese tips will come in handy when I'll start looking for a hat this summer :-) with my fair skin I have to wear hats to prevent a sun burn, so yes, a wide brim is a must! x
ReplyDeleteNikki, my too. I have been mixing and matching at random. I think this guide will enable me to put together more outfits from my closet.
Deletelove this!!!

Giorgia, I'm glad his blog is helping you!
DeleteIt seems so obvious once one starts wearing hat. I find many women will admire a hat then exclaim "where would I wear it?"
ReplyDeleteI tell them I have the same question about handbags and shoes...to earn a puzzled look that I use to guide ladies to consider wearing a hat as an ordinary accessory, just like a purse.
I agree. I have a small bag and shoe collection as a result of always having to prove to myself that it will be worn.

Any tips on what to wear to an outdoors military parade event (my husband's graduation) - dress code is 'louge suits or ladies equivalent'. March in Australia... will still be very warm and a hat is a must, but I have no idea what style!

ReplyDeleteI definitely want to wear a hat, but have no idea what style is suitable!
Michelle,
DeleteI would suggest an outfit similar to mine in the first photo. I asked Hetty Kate her opinion, she suggests a wiggle dress and a hat like the wide brim one Anita O'Day wore at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in this photo: pic.twitter.com/VFfPixeb Isobel from Izziana Millinery said that a straw hat will be suitable, ensuring its not too casual or too big.
